Trojans Total Half of BitDefenders Top Ten E-Threats for July

July 2009

Conficker gains a position, while Trojan.Clicker.CM tops the list for the second month in a row by bypassing popup blockers

Trojans continue to dominate BitDefenders Top Ten E-Threats for July, a countdown of the months most popular pieces of malware. Five of the ten worst e-threats on the list are trojans, making it the best represented e-threat category for the second month in a row.

Worm.Autorun.VHG is the newest e-threat on BitDefender's Top Ten E-Threats for July and can be found at number ten on the list . Worm.Autorun.VHG is a worm that exploits the Autorun bug in Windows, which made the Conficker/Downadup worm famous.

Gaining popularity, the ninth position is held by Exploit.PDF-JS.Gen, an exploit that uses a vulnerability in the way some versions of the Adobe PDF Reader parse embedded javascript.

Trojan.JS.PYV comes in at number eight on BitDefenders Top Ten E-Threats for July at 1.91 percent of total infections.

Seventh position belongs to Trojan.Autorun.AET, which is another trojan exploiting the Autorun vulnerability in Windows.

An old SWF, Exploit.SWF.Gen, is still in heavy use in the wild and lands at sixth place on BitDefenders Top Ten E-Threats for July. Its popularity is partly due to the fact that until recently Adobe was distributing an old version of the player via its website, relying on the player's auto-update feature (which is optional) to pull-in needed security patches.

Win32.Sality.OG, a rootkit-installing file infector, climbed from number six to number five on this months Top Ten E-Threats for July.

In fourth place is Downadup.Gen, also known as Conficker or Kido. Downadup.Gen, increase to 4.15 percent of infections versus last month's 3.33 percent and gained one position on the Top Ten list.

Trojan.Wimad, continued its comeback, holding at number three, slightly increasing from 5.60 percent to 6.16 percent of infections in July, while Trojan.AutorunINF.Gen remained stationary at number two, with almost no percentage change.

Finally, Trojan.Clicker.CM continued to hold the number one spot on the list, increasing from 10.13 percent to 11.41 percent of infections in July.
