As the month of April drew to a close, it felt like 2004 all over again, with mass email regulars including Zafi.B and Netsky.P grappling for top spots (accounting for 10 and 8 percent of the total, respectively).

Although these older threats are still in circulation, the top spot (with a whopping 32.07% of total detections) is the umpteenth variant of the Mytob mailer/backdoor, commented Viorel Canja, head of BitDefender Labs. This rather dangerous piece of malware has been in active development for quite some time, with new versions hitting the Internet every week.

In other news, Trojan.Peed versions (which topped BitDefenders March list) still grabbed a spot in the Top 10, while trojan downloaders of every description (detected heuristically) come in at number six, accounting for a sizeable 3.80%.

The trend towards consolidation is apparent once again, more evident than ever before, as the top ten threats share between themselves a whopping 73.61% of the total number of detections.
